WSJ Article on Sochi

by Timothy Post on 2008/11/16

In September of this year, Anton Troianovski, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, spent a couple days here with me in Krasnodar and also down in Sochi where he attended the Sochi Investment Forum.

I really enjoyed showing Anton around Krasnodar and hoped that he would be able to capture some of Krasnodar’s positive energy in an article. He mentioned that he would be writing a couple articles about Krasnodar Krai.

His first article appeared on Friday November 14th. It’s a very thorough and solid article about how the current economic “crisis” is affecting the preperation for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Here’s the link to the article. Also, below is a quote from the article by my business partner Vladislav Varlashin:

Some smaller investors have shied away from Sochi because they don’t
see profit opportunities. “At the moment, all investments in Sochi are
largely political,” says Vladislav Varlashin, a regional real-estate
developer. “The companies that go in there are either companies
connected to the state … or companies that need something from the
state.

  • I studied in Krasnodar back in 1990. We lived at the Intourist Hotel and studied with a language teach from KGU. My group was from the University of Michigan. I really enjoyed Krasnodar. It's nice to see people working to make it commercially successful.
