Knock on Wood, psst, psst, psst (over left shoulder)

Like many folks from Krasnodar Krai, I am waiting with baited breath. I find it encouraging that President Putin will make a visit himself to Guatemala on July 3rd after visiting the Bushes in Maine. Apparently the city of Sochi is also gearing-up for the announcement by declaring the 4th and 5th of July as holidays and preparing to have a free concert with fireworks.
Should Sochi be awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics it will certainly have a huge impact of the region of Krasnodar Krai both in terms of awareness and investment. After having braved the one road into Sochi numerous times, I, for one, hope to see significant infrastructure improvements accompany the preparation for the Games.
Even Russia Today, a government backed English language news channel, is showing a new commercial for Sochi 2014. For those of you not familiar with Sochi’s geography, Sochi is BOTH a Summer and Winter resort. Sochi, the city, is on the Black Sea and its hotels and spas line the coastline. The skiing and other Winter activities are in Krasnaya Polyana (beautiful meadow) 45 kilometers from the coast. So it is possible to actually stay in Sochi proper and drive up into the mountains each day to ski. During parts of the year, one could literally go skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon. This unique environment would make for a special and original Winter Olympics.
