Attention = Identity
Hello World
There are a number of interesting “socail shopping” websites out there currently. The most well-known are:
StyleFeeder
Wists
Nabbr
My Picklist
SwagRoll
However, as those of you who have played around with the above-listed sites can attest, they are interesting but not truely captivating in the way that Flickr or YouTube were when you first tried them (at least for me).
I believe that the real fun is not in social shopping, per se, but rather in something I will call “social cataloging” for the lack of a better term. Perhaps the best example of I have found in the social cataloging space is
One of the most fascinating aspects of LibraryThing is how people will groom their book collections in such a way as to build a proxy profile of themselves by what books they own or have read. As Tim Spalding, the Founder of LibraryThing, notes, he will often look first at one’s bookshelves when visiting someone for the first time.
In much the same way as books serving as “status signifiers,” other possessions we own also define who we are and how we want to be perceived. For instance, are you are New Balance, Nike, Adidas, Asics, Sketchers type of person? Most everything you buy says something about who you are as a person.
In this blog I will chronicle those objects which define me. I invite you to send me those possessions which are important to you and I will post them for others to see. Each of us is a Taste Broker is our own unique way. Taste is relative, hence the expression, “It’s a matter of taste.”
Lastly, to make this exercise worth your while, I encourage you to open an Associate account at Amazon.com or another affiliate amrketing website and use a url which points back to your account with the affiliate marketing company. Therefore, if someone decides to purchase the item you will receive a small commission. Additionally, please use a static link for the image of the item. The best site I have found for this purpose is Flickr.
Thanks, Timothy Post
